How to sew a fabric handle

Calculating the fabric width is easy - multiply the desired finished width of the handle by 4.

1. Place handle strip wrong side up and fold it in half lengthwise (wrong sides together, right side facing out). Press with an iron.
2. Open the handle and fold one long edge toward the center crease. Press. Repeat with the other side so both long edges meet in the middle.
3. Fold the handle in half again lengthwise, enclosing the raw edges inside. Press well and secure with pins.Â
4. Top stitch along both long edges with a 0.3 cm (1/8 inch) seam allowance, backstitching at both ends.
You can use this handle technique for baskets, totes or any handmade project where you want a clean, sturdy look.
Handmade pieces aren’t just things - they hold the quiet joy of the person who made them.
