Halloween sewing tips for any fabric stash

Halloween is almost here, and maybe you’ve just decided to sew some spooky décor - but don’t have the perfect Halloween fabric. Don’t worry - you can still make something amazing with what you have on hand!

Here are my favorite tips to create festive projects even without “Halloween” prints.

1. Use What’s in Your Stash

You don’t need pumpkins and bats printed on fabric to create Halloween vibes. Try:

  • Black, orange, white and purple solids - perfect for spooky contrast

  • Stripes or polka dots - they look playful and witchy

  • Recycled denim - adds a cool, rustic touch to your project

2. Add Spooky Stitching

Even plain fabric can look Halloween-ready with the right stitching!

  • Try straight parallel lines for a modern look

  • Draw and stitch a simple spider web

  • For a bold look, use thick topstitch thread (like denim thread)

Tip: After sewing, press with a steam iron to flatten wrinkles and remove chalk marks.

3. Play With Creative Shapes

If you’re sewing a fabric basket or storage bin, make it extra fun:

  • Add a curved-line quilting design

  • Mix and match different fabrics for a patchwork look

  • Sew a web design on just one panel for a “spider in the corner” effect

4. Focus on Details

Little touches make a big difference:

  • Add fabric scraps as appliqué bats or pumpkins

  • Tie a ribbon bow in Halloween colors

  • Use contrasting thread to make your design stand out
